Lord Mayor of Birmingham celebrates Birmingham’s next generation of creative talent at BOA Stage and Screen Production Academy

Birmingham’s thriving screen and live events industry took centre stage on Tuesday 30th September as Councillor Zafar Iqbal MBE, Lord Mayor of Birmingham, visited BOA Stage and Screen Production Academy to meet the city’s next generation of filmmakers and creative professionals.

BOA Stage and Screen Production Academy is a leading specialist academy dedicated to nurturing young talent across the creative industries. From film and TV production to theatre, hair and make-up, set and costume design, and technical roles in lighting and sound, the Academy equips students with the skills, experience, and confidence to launch successful careers in the arts and screen industries.

The Lord Mayor was welcomed by Head of School, James Latham, and BOA Group Chief Executive, Kate Tague, before being given a tour of the Academy’s state-of-the-art building. The visit offered a unique opportunity to see lessons in action and to experience first-hand the remarkable breadth of skills being developed at the Academy.

During the tour, the Lord Mayor enjoyed an immersive behind-the-scenes journey through the Academy’s specialist departments. In the TV & Film department, he watched a live filming of student-led interviews and the fast-paced editing process from the gallery. In Hair & Make-Up, he saw students transform into goblins as well as master intricate 1960s beehives. The Lighting & Sound department impressed with an exciting light show, while Set, Props & Costume showcased their stunning progress on costumes and designs for Cinderella, which will be staged at The Old Rep this Winter. Meanwhile, Writing, Directing and Screen Craft students captivated visitors with a session of live improvisation, highlighting the Academy’s focus on collaboration and creativity across all disciplines.

Speaking after the visit, James Latham, Head of School, said: "It was an honour to welcome the Lord Mayor to BOA Stage and Screen Production Academy. His visit provided a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their creativity, technical expertise, and passion for the stage and screen industries. We are incredibly proud of the talent and dedication within our academy, and we are grateful for his support in championing the next generation of film, TV, and theatre professionals."

Kate Tague, Chief Executive of BOA Group, added: "Birmingham is fast becoming a powerhouse for film and screen production, and we are proud that our students are at the heart of that story.
